Passive House Institute’s Jessica Grove-Smith and Vanya Chan will walk workshop attendees through the EnerPHit standard for Passive House retrofits. They’ll explain the pathways of EnerPHit certification for different climate zones, based on either component qualities or on energy demand targets. The workshop will include examples of how to plan, model, and apply for pre-certification of phased retrofit projects with the PHPP. Common pitfalls and challenges in Passive House retrofits and EnerPHit certification will be discussed, as well as examples of solutions employed by practitioners.

Edward Lowes is a façade engineer and research associate at the Passive House Institute, where he has worked since 2016 as part of the component certification team. He studied at the University of Liverpool School of Architecture and Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences. His work focuses on the development and certification of Passive House windows, doors, façade and construction systems, with a particular interest in the low-energy refurbishment of existing building envelopes.

Vanya Chan joined the Passive House Institute’s certification team in 2023. With over 20 years of architectural experience, her passion for energy-efficient design started with sustainable custom homes in Ontario. After earning her Certified Passive House Designer credential in 2017, she subsequently focused on Passive House certified projects in Germany. Now, as an accredited certifier, she specializes in building certification and project consultancy, especially for multi-zoned projects with indoor pools. She is dedicated to advancing sustainable architecture through the Passive House Standard.
